Dining Experience at Sky on 57 [Marina Bay Sands]

28 Mar

Well, as you might have noticed, I am posting more about FOOOOOD nowadays (cos’ that’s the privilege a pregnant woman has —> eat all the time!) Just to update you, I gained 9kg since I got pregnant!!! OMG~

So here’s about my dining experience at one of the coolest landmark in Singapore – Marina Bay Sands~ image When Kelvin called on a Friday evening at 4p.m. telling me that Georges and Vilen are free to meet us for dinner at Marina Bay Sands, I was thrilled!! They are not just friends, they are more like mentors to us. Remember the beautiful French dinner that we had in Tahiti? Well, that’s Georges! And we were so glad to be able to catch up with them before they left for Hong Kong the next day. And the next thing that popped up in my mind was… I wasn’t dressed up at all! Plus I was wearing a pair of really worn flats with watermarks on it! (you know leather shoes, rains water leaves watermarks on it even after it dried up… However, they are supper comfy…) How? How? How? image Then I kept asking around my colleagues if my shoes look alright? And try to see if I can borrow any nicer shoes from Nicolie who worked next door. Just when I was panic and thought of going home to change, Steven said this to me: “Don’t worry, I don’t think they will notice your shoes :) “. Then I thought, yeah, that’s right, I am pregnant now, as long as I don’t walk funny, nobody is going to notice my shoes right?? So we left office at about 5p.m. and by the time we reached the restaurant it was already 7:30p.m. (thanks to traffic jam at causeway and all the red lights on the way…). This was the last glimpse of sunset that I caught on my camera. image Magnificent isn’t it?

Sky on 57 showcases a modern interpretation of Franco Asian Cuisine in a setting that offers a bird’s eye view of Singapore and the bay. Located at Tower One on level 57, the 12,000 square foot restaurant offers guests an unparalleled vista while they dine in a relaxed, sophisticated environment. image That’s us, Georges and his lovely wife Vilen :) We were being placed at a table right beside the window where we could have a nice bay view from 57th floor. We were being served with some nice small bread with butter. I must say the breads were prepared with sincerity. At most of the restaurant that we went to, even high-priced restaurant, they serve cold, stony breads. But here at Sky on 57, they serve warm breads in different variety, cheese, garlic, French…etc… and they tasted so nice! I so wanted to have more but afraid that I would be full when the main is served :)

Seared Hokkaido Scallops – SGD 50 image

It was soooooo nice! The small fragments of parmesan cheese on top of the scallops make it taste so divine especially when eating together with the parsley gravy beneath. Oh, I am salivating now…

Tempura of Stuffed Soft-Shell Crab – SGD 38image

You probably can’t tell from the picture that it’s crab (it was so dimmed in the restaurant). But this was indeed what I ordered  for Kelvin. According to Kelvin, the vegetable and lobster sauce they used to make this dish make the fried soft shell crab tasted extraordinarily delicious.

Main: Sauteed Maine Lobster “Marco Polo” – SGD 30image

I wonder why it’s being named “Marco Polo”, could it mean when West meets East? Cos’ at first glance, it does look like “wan ton mee” with lobster on it :) The portion is pretty small, and Georges was afraid that it might not be enough for me as I am eating for 2 now, he said. It is a little bit spicy and because they used thin spaghetti to make this “Marco Polo”, it really tastes like lobster “wan tan mee” :)

Duo Preparation of Sakura Chicken – SGD 52image

Kelvin ordered this and when he had the first bite, his comment was: This is so tender! He has never tasted chicken in this texture and he liked it so much. The chicken breast was roasted and the chicken thigh was salted and then cooked and preserved in duck’s fats. Very well done~

Steamed Canadian Halibut – SGD 60image

This was what Georges ordered and this was also the dish that made us look at the restaurant differently. The story went like this, being a fish lover who lives in a place full of fresh fishes, Georges has a great knowledge of how fishes from different region of the world taste like. So when he used his spatula-shaped blade to cut the fish, his showed a puzzled expression on his face. Then he was there studying the Halibut fillet thoroughly. Kelvin asked him, what’s wrong Georges? “I don’t think this is a Canadian Halibut, it looks more like Vietnamese…”. I was chit-chatting with Vilen and when I overheard his words, I put down my fork and asked: Wow Georges~ You can even tell the origin of the fish just by looking at it!!? (cos’ I really find it unbelievable, for I can only tell whether the fish is fresh or fishy, which is super obvious…). Then he explained, the texture of Canadian Halibut has dense meat and should be firm. He pointed at his plate and said, but this one becomes flaky and loose when it’s cut. (Interesting…)

So Kelvin called up one of the pretty waitresses and explained the situation to her. She quickly offered to change a new one for Georges, but Georges was so kind that he said it’s okay. Then Kelvin told her that we just want to find out more about the origin of the fish and if it’s Canadian, why is it so tender? The waitress smiled and said she will go check it out and get someone who has better knowledge to explain to us but that person never turn up -.-

It was a splendid night although the bill is huge! The overall dining experience was good (largely due to the company and the atmosphere) and I’ll definitely recommend to those who want to spend some quality time enjoying quality food together. You can click here for reservation and menus.

After the dinner, we went out to the deck to have a better look of the night view. Georges and Vilen were commenting that Singapore looks more “peaceful” at night. That night we shared a lot about life, families and experiences. Vilen told me alot about living in Tahiti, San Francisco and a great deal on her grandchildren. Some tips and tricks in taking care of babies and diet and stuffs… She even bought us a set of lovely baby clothes from this French brand “Petit Bateau”. I am so touched! They are very nice people right?

When we walked ourselves to the carpark, I noticed that they hold hands and talked and cracked jokes on each other. I became so envious that I squeezed Kelvin’s palm lightly and prayed secretly in my heart that when we are at their age, we can still do that together and travel to different places and eat and meet friends and enjoy each others company… image“Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.” - Nicholas Sparks

Eryn Anniversary

Today marks the 9th year Kelvin and I have been together. Loving as he always is, he planned special dinner to celebrate this special day. We knocked off at 6:30pm and he brought me to this cozy western restaurant that serves Mediterranean food like French, Spanish, Italian, Moroccan and Greek dishes located at Jalan Serampang. I was so excited that I started planning what to wear the day before :)

I must say I am quite impressed by the deco and the overall atmosphere in this restaurant.

Sweetwater 1

The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous with an open space section where sunlight shines in from the rooftop. We were being placed at a corner with soft cushions next to a giant mirror which makes the spaces look bigger and brighter.Sweetwater 2

The starter of French onion soup ($16.00) was nicely cooked with caramelized onions. The crispy cheese at the side adds credit to the overall taste of the simple soup. A bit salty I must say, but 2 of us finished it in no time :)

French Onion Soup

I am a big fan of mushroom, which goes deliciously with chicken especially in creamy sauce :) We sprinkled this pollo champinones ($14.00) with chilli flakes and eat it up with the warm crispy bread.

Pollo Champinones

For main course, Kelvin ordered his favourite carbonara ($46.00). It is very disappointing as the sauce lack richness in flavour and tasted a bit bland and off flavour with the addition of broccoli. For this price, we actually expecting something rich and divine in taste. But at $46.00, this dish felt like a rip-off.

Carbonara

I ordered myself Morrocan chicken with rice ($55.00). There were 4 decent sized chicken breast pieces heavily spiced in tumeric, paprika and ginger and other spices that I couldn’t tell just from eating, lying on top of saucy rice. It smelled so good even from across the table :) A very unique taste, particularly if you are into spices.

Moroccan Chicken

The overall dining experience is awesome, but the waiting time is a bit too long. We waited for an average of 15 minutes between bread – soup – entree – main courses. We were fine with it since it is our anniversary celebration, we had so much to talk about in between the dishes. But if you are in a hurry or very hungry, you might want to ask the chef to serve everything together (I reckon it would be faster!). Besides that, they do have a very impressive selection of wines and drinks, but since I am pregnant and would not want to take any alcohol and cold drinks, I saved Kelvin some money by just ordering water… T__T

Also, due to the long dining time and our small stomach, after finishing our main courses, we can find no space for the desserts anymore. However, according to the menu and chef’s recommendation, we deduce that the desserts here are definitely worth coming back for. Well, I’ll update you next time when we come back for dessert :)

Okay I know, I initially wanted to write about our anniversary celebration and I ended up writing a food review :) That’s because most of my friends has been asking me where I usually dine in JB and if there’s any good eatery around JB, so here’s for you who’s looking for a perfect dining place for your date night :) A bit pricey, but definitely worth it as long as you don’t order carbonara… hehe… Visit their website for reservation and more info: www.sweetwaterrestaurant.info

So…

Here’s about us… our 9th anniversary.

A few days ago, Taiwanese director Ang Lee won Oscar for the best director with the film “Life Of Pi”. And I just so happened to read about a short article that he wrote about how his wife supported him through his career’s down time. It’s called <A Never-Ending Dream>, it says about his wife believing in his dream even though she had to provide for the family while he struggled and torn between dreams and reality. Click here for the full version in both Chinese and English. After reading the article, I quickly made a prayer: God, please help me to be that woman, who can believe and support my husband’s dreams even in the worst time…

Kelvin And I

From one of a framed pictures that we took back then.

I have known him for 9 years. And when I asked him during the dinner, what are the changes you see in yourself in this 9 years. He replied, I am a happier man now, with a big smile on his face.

I always believe that you can never change a man. You can only help to bring out his best. I am not so sure about him, but to me, he has been there to shape me into a prettier, smarter and confident woman. When I looked at his small eyes while scooping my rice out from the hot plate, I thought it is such a blessing that we have each other for the past 9 years. He is always caring and supportive. I feel both safe and free in his love. He believes in every of my dreams, big or small, sometimes even dreams that I find it ridiculous (like flying to Indonesia just to have crabs and having dolphins as pets…etc). He never laughed at my dumbness and never look down on me nor my dreams. He makes me more courageous in realizing my life and to dream bigger.

Baby Belly

And now, we have a baby on the way… It would be a whole new journey filled with unknowns… Deep inside, I know I need more patience and humility in the future to be a good wife and a good mother at the same time. Fear? yes. But I know God has a plan for us and I’m so thankful that Kelvin is always there when I am scared.

To mark our anniversary, he gave me a set of lavish jewellery the night, Peacocks with stones in various colours which I love at the first sight although I really don’t know where I can wear this to… He named it “The Beginning of A Wonderful Journey”.

The Start of Another Wonderful Journey with You

They say an anniversary is a time to celebrate the joys of today, the memories of yesterday, and the hopes of tomorrow.

That’s exactly how I feel now, and may there be many many many more to come :)

Happy Anniversary darling!!

How To Be A Happy Couple?

Orbit Revolving Restaurant [SKY TOWER]

5 Sep

I have come to notice that one of the popular search engine term that links to my blog is “Orbit“. So I thought maybe many of you out there might wanna find out more about the dining experience at Orbit revolving restaurant in Auckland :) Here’s a little review of my personal experience at Sky tower. As the tallest tower in southern hemisphere, Sky Tower definitely has the very best views of Auckland city.

Admission to the Sky Tower’s Main Observation is complimentary for Orbit guests 45 minutes prior to dining and/or upon completion of dining. So, we went to the observatory deck before the dinner.

You can see through the “glass floor” and scare yourself… Kekeke… Or you can join our friend Chris who jumped on it to test out the reliability of the material \”o”/

Admiring the magnificent view~

Then we headed to ‘ORBIT’, the 360º revolving restaurant to enjoy our “meals at the height of luxury” (Muahahaha, I felt so exclusive already… kekeke)

The restaurant takes one hour to completely revolve 360º, and the rotation is hardly noticeable. The waiter reminds us not to leave our bag or camera on the floor by the window next to the table. Because the table will slowly move and you might leave your belongings behind! Then I keep looking at the edge and see if any Chanel handbags floats by… (kidding)

The food is great! It definitely matches the height :)

Pardon me as I don’t remember what I ordered just by looking at the picture. But every dishes we ordered was devine.

If you wanna find out the price, it averages as below:

Starter $20

Main $38

Side $5

Dessert $16

A minimum $40 per person is required though.

If you notice something “blinking” fly past you outside the window as you enjoy your wine, don’t blame it on the wine, it really is someone flying past you, doing a ‘Sky Jump’!

Our great companies of the night :D Hopefully it gives you an idea of the overall dining experience.  I personally enjoyed it very much and find it a MUST DO when you are in Auckland city. For reservation and more information, click here.
