Let’s Talk About Work

Everyone works. It’s a way of contributing to the society and proved self-worthiness. Well, you may think that you work because of money, but if you look carefully, there are so much more about what you do for a living.

Today I would like to share about what I think about work. The concept of work comes naturally to me when I was very young. I was being brought up in a context that working hard is the only way to be successful. My father is an entrepreneur. So, it occurs to me that work is an essential part of life. Working is about spending time and effort on something and make it profitable~

It’s About Money

As I grow older, working is about supplying my knowledge and time, and in return I get money to do whatever that I enjoy. At the end of the day, we all need money to pay the bills, go travel, acquire some possessions like car and house. And few years down the road, I started to see work from a new perspective. If that’s entirely true that we all work for money, how do you explain people like Warren Buffett or Bill Gates, whose combined net worth is greater than the GDP of Luxembourg and yet who throw themselves into their jobs as if their next meal depended on it?

Work was never about money really. That is why when we were young, when we were being asked about what we want to do when we grow up, we never say something like: I want to be a doctor because it is a high-paying job and I can earn a lot of money. We would say something like: I want to be a doctor so that I can save lives (or cure cancers).

It’s about being productive, create values, satisfaction and realizing your dreams! (while making money)

Work And Values

Nowadays I love to put meanings into what I do. For example I will ask myself, what is the reason of my existence in the company? What problems that I can solve? Why is the thing that I do important and how can I make a positive difference? And I realize the more I understand my work, the more I can contribute, and thus I feel more satisfied and happy.

And it’s obvious that no one ever made a million doing something they hate…

Job Satisfaction

Working also brings sense of accomplishment and well-being. I feel like I am doing something to contribute to the common good of the society and fulfill my material needs (you know how much basic neccesity of a baby would cost, plus all the “maintenance” fee for my hair, face, body…).

I am very fortunate to work with a team of genuinely good people. So my work sort of providing me a social life! A life where I get to interact with different people and get the best out of it. Also, my work permits me to freely express my creativity and grow in new challenges. I know it is weird, but some times I really get excited on Sunday night that I can go work on Monday~ *hehe*

As A Full Time Working Mother

It’s a new role I have been trying to fit it. And I find myself lucky enough to have a lot of helping hands available. To me, getting things organized and planned out is very important. I am really good at switching “mode”; when I am working, I give my 100% to work, and when I am at home, all my attention will be with Isabelle and my husband. I seldom have problem stressing over work while taking care of the baby, or calling hundred times during working hour just to check on the baby~

Keep Working

Maybe what I do is just very tiny portion of a bigger vision, but I do believe that if I can keep working painstakingly with my passion, one day I’ll be able to influence people and make a positive difference to the world.

Psalm 128:2
You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. (NIV)

Your analysis of work and its impact is very thoughtful. I wholeheartedly agree too we should love what we do, otherwise I feel we do see that in the resultsof our work and it spills over into our lives. Well said, and great dress!
